Portola Valley Craftsman

This custom home is located in Portola Valley on a hillside property with dramatic views. The “build-able” area was limited due to steeply sloping terrain, existing trees and tricky vehicular access.  The design challenge was to utilize these features to create a home that nestles into the site to minimize the mass of the building & maximize privacy from neighbors while retaining as much valuable “level” area as possible for outdoor living.

The solution is a multi-level Craftsman home that capitalizes on the panoramic views of Silicon Valley and coastal hills.  The exterior palette incorporates natural materials such as stained cedar siding, stone and integral color concrete to blend with the natural beauty of the site.  Craftsman detailing such as heavy timber brackets, trellises, authentic wide-style trim and period light fixtures add richness to the exterior.  Green features include deconstruction of the existing residence, photovoltaic panels, solar radiant slab heating, natural ventilation, reclaimed wood floors and drought tolerant landscaping.
